Normanton (Queensland)

Normanton is a small town in the northwest of the state of Queensland in Australia. It is located about 30 kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria, on the banks of the Norman River. The city has about 1,100 inhabitants, of which 60 % are Aboriginal.

Normanton is located about 770 kilometers west of Cairns and about 370 kilometers north of Cloncurry. Major roads are the Gulf Developmental Road to the east, which is part of the National Highway 1 and the Burke Developmental Road to the south. The latter is also known as part of the Highway Matilda.

Normanton is the terminus of the " Gulflander ", an isolated from the remaining route network rail link between Croydon and Normanton. This railway line was built in the time of the gold discoveries in the 1890s. Today, the Gulflander runs only once a week.

In July 1957 Krys, was shot dead the largest ever imposed on Norman Crocodile River. It was 8.63 meters long. A life-size replica of the crocodile stands today in memory of this event in Henry Park right next to the building of the Carpentaria Shire Council, whose main town is Normanton.
