Norrmalmstorg

Norrmalmstorg is a place in the Stockholm district of Norrmalm. He is often associated with the hostage drama at Norrmalmstorg in 1973 in connection to the Stockholm syndrome is due. However, the place has a much longer history.

Before the embankment of Nybroviken in the 17th century the place was right on one of two ports that existed at that time. At that time the place was called Packartorget, named after the Packarhuset, one situated on the square building where the incoming fish was inspected and reloaded. Because of the fish trade, he was sometimes referred to in the 16th century Fiskartorget, but there was already a place with that name in Gamla stan, the name was later no longer needed.

In 1853 the court finally got the name Norrmalmstorg, which had previously been used for the Gustavus Adolphus Torg. The name change was done in connection with the reorganization of the Berzelii Park. At that time the place was a dirty and smelly place where fish smell mingled with the stench of latrines and waste.

Today, the square is used as a marketplace. In addition to the Palmhuset with a café and a newspaper stand here is also one of the termini of the tram line Djurgården.
