North American T-2 Buckeye

The North American T -2 Buckeye is a two-seat training aircraft for the U.S. Navy, which was developed and built by the U.S. company North American Aviation.

History

1956 examined the U.S. Navy for a new training aircraft, inexpensive basic training on jet-propelled aircraft could be carried out with the. North American Aviation then offered to a on the experience with the FJ -1 Fury ( from this comes the structure ) and the T- 28 Trojan ( cockpit layout and control) based redevelopment and won the bid. The first flight of the prototype YT2J -1 ( 1962 YT -2A ) on January 31, 1958. The first production version T2J -1 was found in November 1959 in service and renamed in 1962 in T -2A. The last of the 201 series machines of the first series was handed over to the Navy in April 1961. The first prototype, now with two engines Pratt & Whitney and slightly modified avionics had its maiden flight on 30 August 1962; whose first production aircraft followed in May 1965. On April 17, 1968, flew the prototype of the third series version with General Electric J85 engines. In 1997, the pattern as a result of manifest defects was treated three times briefly out of service. It replaced the partially Lockheed T2V SeaStar and should be self- starting in 2008 replaced by the T -45 Goshawk. The last aircraft carrier landing took place on 23 July 2003. A total of 529 machines of various versions have been built, which have now logged over 3.4 million flight hours.

At the T- 2, the seats are height shifty, which at the time represented a novelty, today, this is standard in Jettrainern. It allows the rear seat instructor similar visibility as it also has the student pilot. The machines are equipped with ejector seats of the type Rockwell LS-1, this function from zero altitude (zero / zero seat). The buckeye is flown as a trainer today by the Greek Air Force.
