North Banat District

Severni Banat ( Serbian: Severno - Banatski okrug or Северно - Банатски округ, ungar Észak - Bansagi körzet, Slovak:. Severobanátsky okres, rum. Districtul Banatul de Nord, Croat. Sjeverno - Banatski okrug ) is a Serbian administrative district in the northern part of Vojvodina.

It consists of the following municipalities:

  • Kanjiža ( ungar Magyarkanizsa )
  • Senta ( Zenta ungar )
  • Ada
  • Coka ( ungar Csóka )
  • Novi Kneževac ( ungar Törökkanizsa )
  • Kikinda ( ungar Nagykikinda )

This district has 2002 165.881 inhabitants according to the census. The main administrative center is the city of Kikinda.

Ethnically, the population in the district is mainly composed of Magyars ( 78.551 or 47.4 %) and Serbs ( 72 242 or 43.6 % ) and others.

The languages ​​most commonly used are Serbian and Hungarian, with 48% each.

Municipalities with Serb majority are Kikinda (76%) and Novi Kneževac ( 59%), with Magyar majority Ada ( 77%), Coka ( 52%), Kanjiža ( 86%) and Senta ( 81%). Of the 50 sub- communities, there are 19 Serb majority, one mixed, and the remaining with Magyar majority.

In Kikinda, the first Serbian printing was opened in 1878, a year later, the first library of Serbia. Well-known personalities of the city, for example the painter Teodor Ilić Češljar, Nikola Aleksic, Đura PECIC and Đura Jakšić that also have international recognition.

Kikinda is the center of the Serbian Lehmmaterialienproduktion with the company IGM DD Toza Marković, which is also the oldest European Lehmfabrik in Europe at the same time. Other economic priorities are the manufacture of agricultural machinery and tools ( 25 Maj and Electron), which also have a large number of orders from international customers.
