North Bay, Ontario

North Bay [ ˌ nɔɹθ beɪ̯ ] is a city in the province of Ontario (Region Northeast Ontario), Canada. North Bay takes its name from its position on the shore of Lake Nipissing and is the capital of the Nipissing District were. The total area of the city is 314.92 km ².

Geography and climate

North Bay located approximately 345 kilometers north of Toronto, Ontario. The city is situated on the Canadian Shield, and therefore has a different geography than southern Ontario. This situation brings a more rugged landscape shape of the surrounding countryside with it. North Bay is located on the watershed of the Ottawaflusses and the Great Lakes. In the city there are branches of Highways 11 and 17; North Bay is thus a main transportation route for Northern Ontario. It is the southernmost stop on the Ontario Northland Railway. Through the Jack Garland Airport in North Bay has a connection to the aviation.

The climate in North Bay is typical of northern Ontario, that is generally drier than that of southern Ontario by the greater distance to the Great Lakes. Due to the rather cold Lake Nipissing the region's climate is cooler in comparison.

Economy and infrastructure

North Bay is economically broader than many other cities in Northern Ontario, although a large proportion of jobs in the city nature, education, and policy in the public service sectors, which provide most employers in the city. The service industry, tourism and transport also play a significant role in the economy of the city. Education

North Bay is the seat of Nipissing University, founded in 1992, and Canadore College, established in 1967. Approximately 7,000 full-time students and more than 1,000 part-time students are enrolled in the two post-secondary institutions, which have a common campus in the west of the city.

Development of the waterfront

The city has comprehensive plans for the development of the waterfront. In the 1980s, a promenade along the Lake Nipissing was created, which is a mile long and is adjacent to the town center. A miniature railway and two old ( created by local craftsmen ) carousels were acquired, representing an attraction for both tourists and locals. Currently, a former railway station of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the new Community Park is being renovated with the intention to connect the waterfront with the town center after the commencement thereof.
