North Canton is a city in Stark County in the U.S. state of Ohio near the city of Akron.

Geography

The city is located north of Canton on a western arm of the Nimishillen Creek in northeastern Ohio. North Canton has a total area of 15.7 square kilometers, the urban area is located primarily on the east side of Interstate 77 between Canton and Akron. It belongs to a heavily populated area between Canton and Akron in the otherwise predominantly rural region of the northeastern Ohio. Along Interstate on either side of a whole range of commercial and industrial enterprises have settled, while further away vast residential areas.

Population

In the 2000 census, North Canton had 16,369 inhabitants, almost 97 % of whites. The per capita income was $ 24,045. In addition to several elementary and middle schools are at the site, the private Catholic high school and the Walsh University North Canton Hoover High School.

History

Established in 1831 by the town was mostly German immigrants than New Berlin. End of the First World War (1918 ) he was given its present name.

In 1901, a streetcar Interurban Line, opened between Canton and Akron, which also went through North Canton and contributed their contribution to the economic development of the town because of the improved transport facilities. A short time later invented James Murray Spangler (1848-1915), originally the owner of a tannery in the city, in 1907, a vacuum vacuum cleaner, Hoover vacuum cleaner. The family decided to give up the tanning industry, and founded the Hoover Company, which rose to become the world's largest vacuum cleaner manufacturer to the mid-1930s.

The company characterized the development of the city. Donations enabled the construction of various public buildings - including the city library - and supported the construction of the 1946 Memorial erected stage. After the company built in 1957, Hoover High School were named.

1946 was opened northwest of the city of Akron -Canton Regional Airport, and 1966, the last section of Interstate 77 was completed between Canton and Akron. Due to the rapid development of automobile traffic, the population of about 3500 grew between 1950 and 1970 to almost 15,000. For this reason, most of the existing schools today were built during this period.

After the takeover of the U.S. Department of Hoover by TTI in 2007, the operation was shut down and sold the land. At the company's history now remembers the Hoover Historical Center on the campus of Walsh University.

Economy

Due to good transport links North Canton is economically well developed. Of special status is the Foreign Trade Zone, a special economic zone, not subject to U.S. customs rules within which trade goods.

The former Hoover area now belongs to the Industrial Realty Group, which remodels to multi-purpose use. Except Hoover other companies from North Canton are also nationally significant, for example, the company Diebold, a manufacturer of ATMs, headquartered in Canton. In addition, many other companies are located on site, a large employer is also the Walsh University.
