North German federal election, 1867

The general election in February 1867 was the election to the constituent Reichstag of the North German Confederation. The general election was held on February 12, 1867; in the following weeks, followed by the required run-off elections. The Member States of the North German Confederation had been divided for the election in 297 constituencies, of which 236 were in Prussia. The kingdoms of Bavaria and Wurtemberg, the Grand Duchy of Baden and the southern part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse did not belong to the North German Confederation and therefore did not participate in the election. After the Constituent Diet advise the constitution of the North German Confederation and had decided, was followed in August 1867, elected a full Reichstag of the North German Confederation.

Overall result

The supporters of the policy of Otto von Bismarck, ie Free Conservatives, National Liberals and other right-wing forces received a clear majority of seats. Especially in the 1866 annexed by Prussia provinces Schleswig-Holstein and Hanover achieved federal -constitutional candidate electoral success. The Saxon People's Party, a forerunner of the later Social Democrats, took two seats in parliament.

Due to incomplete documentation of the voting results are available in the literature no traditional breakdown of the overall results after votes and percentages. The following table indicates the number of elected deputies to the parties as they appear in the contemporary Reichstag manuals.

Elected representatives by constituencies

In each of the 297 constituencies, a deputy was elected by absolute majority vote. If no candidate in the first ballot won an absolute majority, a runoff between the top two candidates was performed.
