The Volcanic Plateau of New Zealand, sometimes also referred to as North Iceland Volcanic Plateau, is one of nine ecological regions of the country and refers to a shaped by volcanic activity spacious plateau in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand.

Geography

The Volcanic Plateau covers an area of roughly 35.000km2, ranging from the Kaimai Range in the northwest, along the Bay of Plenty east to Rakumara Range, then south to the Ruahine Range and west across the Whanganui National Park to Mount Taranaki. In this area there are those with the most active volcanoes in the country, Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu, to the Lake Taupo and the volcanic active region around Lake Rotorua. The Volcanic Plateau overlaps in part with the Taupo Volcanic Zone, a volcanic active fault that runs south running down from White Iceland in the Bay of Plenty to Mount Ruapehu.

Central Volcanic Plateau

The Central Volcanic Plateau is often often confused in common usage in the Volcanic Plateau, but is also used to refer to different areas, even in New Zealand misleading. On one hand, the plateau in the Tongariro National Park around the volcanoes Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu is often referred to as the Central Volcanic Plateau of the tourism industry. On the other hand, refer to official sources, the region around Lake Taupo between Turangi, at the southern end of the lake and to Atiamuri, south of Rotorua located, as the Central Volcanic Plateau. In other definitions, designated as central region attracts over to Rotorua Bay of Plenty down or define the region at the end of the Taupo Volcanic Zone of Lake Taupo through to Mount Ruapehu.

Landscape

To the west of the three volcanoes Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu is rough wooded hills, while it is preferable to ash soils finds in the East, if ever permit, only a sparse vegetation. No wonder the area east of the volcanoes as Rangipo Desert ( wasteland, desert ) is called. Part of this wasteland is a closed military zone. Here the New Zealand Army holds its military exercises. Further east rises with some Forest Park a vast forest landscape that stretches up to the Bay of Plenty and in the northeastern " corner " of the North Island, Eastland, called draws. To the west of Lake Taupo also extends a wooded area to the north, runs west from Rotorua and ends in the foothills of the Kaimai Range. West of the Tongariro National Park closing at the Whanganui National Park. The highlands ends here at the volcano Mount Taranaki.
