North Island

The New Zealand North Island (English North Iceland, Māori Te Ika -a- Maui) is separated by 35 km wide Cook Strait from the South Island. The North Island is the municipal center of gravity of the country, are at their largest city Auckland ( 1.3207 million inhabitants) and the capital Wellington ( 448 956 inhabitants). The area is 113 729 km2. Inland, there are several active volcanoes and geysers. The highest volcano is the Ruapehu with a height of 2,797 m.

The Māori name for the North Island Te Ika -a- Maui ( " The fish of Maui " ) derives from the shape of the island and its mythological history, with Wellington as the head, Taranaki in the west and the East Cape in the east as fins and Northland north of Auckland as the tail of the fish.
