North Rhine-Westphalia state election, 1990

In this state election, the SPD - alone government presented by Prime Minister John Rau again re-election. Rau was since September 1978 Prime Minister; he introduced himself ( after 1982 and 1986 ) in 1990 for the third time for re-election. For the CDU Labor Minister Norbert Blum ran as challengers of Johannes Rau. The CDU received a minimally higher share of the vote than in the election before. The SPD was able to defend their 1980 -won an absolute majority; she lost 2.1 percentage points and was 50.0 percent of the vote.

The FDP lost slightly to 5.8 percent. The Greens got exactly 5.0 percent; so it overcame the first time the five percent hurdle, and went into the parliament.

Result

A decision under the scrutiny procedure drew on 5 March 1992 Hagen Müller ( SPD) in the Diet as a directly elected MP for the constituency of 151 ( Maerkischer circle IV), originally established winner in the constituency, Petra Böckelmann (CDU ), was eliminated. Thus, the number of direct mandates of the SPD from 121 to 122 increased the CDU received an additional compensation mandate. Thus, the total number of seats increased from 237 to 239
