North–South connection (Brussels)

The Brussels North-South junction line connects the Brussels North Station ( Brussel-Noord/Bruxelles-Nord ) with the Brussels South Station ( Brussel-Zuid/Bruxelles-Midi ). With about 1,200 trains per day is the underground, sechsgleisige track of the most densely trafficked railway tunnel in the world.

Operation and history

Originally Brussels head had three railway stations: The South Station, North Station and the Brussels- Luxembourg. This situation was very disadvantageous for railway operation and cost passengers traveled through the Brussels time.

Beginning in 1866, then the Luxembourg station was connected to the North train station ( Brussels- Namur ), but a combination of the two main railway stations in Brussels Brussel -Noord and Brussel -Zuid still missing. When the Senne was built over in the 19th century in Brussels, the idea arose to implement the new railway line underground. After several discussions it was decided in 1903 for the tunnel solution, construction began in 1911 and was completed the new route in the 1950s. The long construction period is justified by the two world wars, which interrupted the construction several times. The line was officially opened on October 4, 1952 by King Baudouin I and was with the completion of all of the tracks on May 23, 1954 fully operational. A tunnel with 1,948 m in length and three tunnels, each with two tracks was the backbone of the Brussels North -South connection path.
