North Sydney (Nova Scotia)

North Sydney is a municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and has 6048 inhabitants ( 2011).

North Sydney is located on the northeast coast of Cape Breton Island between the St. Lawrence Gulf and the Atlantic Ocean. The city's port is dock for the Marine Atlantic ferry service between the Canadian mainland and Newfoundland ports Port aux Basques and Argentia and is therefore part of the Trans-Canada Highway

History

End of the 18th century, North Sydney was a thriving port city. Around 1870 was the port of the city is the fourth largest in Canada. Steamboats loaded coal here and the Western Union had in 1875 set up an intercontinental telegraph line. 1891 people lived in 2513 in North Sydney.

The ferry to Newfoundland in 1898 was added after the Reid Newfoundland Company North Sydney was chosen as the mainland port. The voyage of the SS Bruce to Port aux Basques in June this year was the first ride of an existing ferry service until today.
