The North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve ( lett: Ziemeļvidzemes biosfēras rezervāts ) is located in Vidzeme, in northern Latvia, on the border with Estonia. It stretches over 4576 km ², or about 6 % of the area of Latvia, and includes 51 smaller nature reserves.
In 1990, the Latvian government established already a protection zone in the present boundaries of the biosphere reserve with a management Salacgrīva, which was officially launched as the first Biosphere Reserve in Latvia on 11 December 1997 by UNESCO.
The biosphere reserve North Vidzeme is particularly characterized by
- The Salaca, a relatively fast-flowing river with banks of sandstone cliffs and caves, especially around the city Mazsalaca,
- The largely untouched Baltic Sea beach of Vidzeme and
