North West Cape

Geographical location

The North West Cape is a large peninsula on the northwest coast of the State of Western Australia, Australia.

The Cape Range National Park extends to this peninsula to; to him the Ningaloo Reef, which extends up to the western end of the peninsula belongs. On the peninsula is the town of Exmouth.

History

In 1618 Captain Lenaert Jacobszoon of the Dutch East India Company and supercargo Willem Janszoon landed on Mauritius were the first Europeans in the area.

In 1818, Phillip Parker King came there and named the North West Cape Peninsula and the Exmouth Gulf (after Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth ).

Later Australian Pearl Fishers of Broome with sailboats, the loggers in the area of the North West Cape came. During the Second World War, a military operation was codenamed Operation Potshot in the field instead.

In 1953 on the North West Cape in the Rough Range oil deposit was discovered that exploits the oil company, West Australian Petroleum Pty Ltd, which in 2000 in Chevron Australia Pty Ltd.. renamed.

Tourists come to the peninsula because of the Cape Range National Park and the coast upstream Ningaloo Reef. This is regarded as excellent diving area; it can be observed there whale sharks.

The peninsula is visited annually by the strong tropical cyclone season.
