North Western Province, Sri Lanka

The North West Frontier Province ( Wayamba also, singhales. වයඹ පලාත ) is a province of Sri Lanka. Its capital is Kurunegala. It consists of the districts of Kurunegala and Puttalam management. The province covers 7888 km ² of area and has 2,184,136 inhabitants ( 2005).

A western coast of the province was claimed by the Tamil Tigers as part of Tamil Eelam. The province is known mainly for its numerous coconut plantations.

Other major cities of the province are the fishing ports Chilaw ( 24,712 inhabitants) and Puttalam ( 45,661 inhabitants).

The majority of the population are Sinhalese, but many of the coastal inhabitants also speak Tamil. There is also a relatively large number of Moors to Puttalam.

Fishing and shrimp farming are next to coconut and rubber plantations, the main economic activities of the region.

The climate is tropical, with a dry season and temperatures between 25 ° in January and 28 ° C in March. The south of the province is more moist and has almost 2000 mm of rainfall per year. The northern part with less than 1000 mm annual rainfall of the driest regions of Sri Lanka.
