Northern Bahr el Ghazal

Northern Bahr el Ghazal (Arabic شمال بحر الغزال Schamal Bahr al - Ghazāl, DMG Samal Bahr al -Ghazal, Northern Gazelle river ' ) is a state in southern Sudan.

It has an area of 33,558 km ² and according to the census of 2008, approximately 720,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Aweil, another larger places are Malual Kon, Marial Bai, Wed Weil and Nyamlell.

Geography

The vegetation consists mainly of dry savannah, in contrast to the region also Bahr al - Ghazal belonging to state of Western Bahr el Ghazal, whose landscape is primarily characterized by humid savanna.

Is named the region after the river Bahr al - Ghazal ( Gazelle river).

History

From 1919 to 1948, the territory of today's state of Northern Bahr el Ghazal and Equatoria belonged to the province from 1948 to 1976 the province of Bahr al - Ghazal, which was split from Equatoria in 1948. From 1991 to 1994, the territory of Northern Bahr el Ghazal part of the newly created state of Bahr al - Ghazal, the possible within the limits of the province of Bahr al - Ghazal 1948-1976. On 14 February 1994 Northern Bahr el Ghazal was spun off as a state in the present boundaries. The border demarcation is unclear, according to some maps of the eastern part belongs to the state of Warrap.

In the second Civil War in Southern Sudan 1983-2005 Northern Bahr el Ghazal was severely affected by fighting because of its location on the border with northern Sudan and on the strategically important railway line from the north via Aweil to Wau.

Management

Northern Bahr el Ghazal is, like the other states of Southern Sudan also divided into counties. Other administrative units under the counties are Payams and including Bomas.
