Northern Cape

The Northern Cape ( Afrikaans Noord -Kaap, English Northern Cape, Setswana: Kapa Bokone, IsiXhosa Mntla - colonial ) is in the northwest of the Republic of South Africa and takes almost 30 % of the country's territory. It is bordered to the west by the Atlantic Ocean and on the north by Botswana and Namibia. It was formed in 1994 when the Cape Province was divided.

While the Northern Cape in terms of area is the largest province in South Africa, it is also the most sparsely populated.

Districts

The province is divided into five administrative districts ( District Municipality ) and these in turn into municipalities (Local Municipalities ):

  • Frances Baard District with the communities Sol Plaatjie, Phokwane, Dikgatlong, Magareng
  • Kgalagadi District with the municipalities of Ga - Segonyana, Gamagara, Joe Morolong
  • Namakwa ( Namaqua ) district with the communities Kamiesberg, Karoo Hoogland, Nama Khoi, Richtersveld, Khai - Ma, Hantam
  • Pixley Ka Seme district with communities Emthanjeni, Kareeberg, Renosterberg, Siyancuma, Siyathemba, Thembelihle, Ubuntu, Umsobomvu
  • IF Mgcawu district with communities Kai! Garib, Kgatelopele, Khara Hais, ! Kheis, Mier, Tsantsabane
