Northern Nigeria Protectorate

The Protectorate of Northern Nigeria (English Northern Nigeria Protectorate ) was from 1900 to 1914 a British protectorate in West Africa.

Together with the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria, it formed the basis of the former colony of Nigeria.

The Protectorate of Southern Nigeria in 1900 was formed from territories of the Royal Niger Company trading company. Thus, the British colonial administration is marked off against German and French interests and limited the power of the traditional Caliphate Sokoto and Bornu. These were in 1903 and 1906 defeated permanently. In 1914 the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria united with the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria into a single colony, whose territories were administered, however, de facto separated until 1946.

Northern Nigeria was until 1900 administered by a high commissioner, then by a governor. High Commissioner of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria were Sir Frederick Lugard 1900-1906, the 1906-1907 Sir William Wallace ( governor) was represented, and from 1907 to 1908 Edouard Percy Girouard Cranwill. Governors were again 1908-1909 Edouard Percy Girouard Cranwill, 1909-1912 Henry Hesketh Bell and Joudou 1912-1914 Sir Frederick Lugard in turn, at the same time held the office of Governor of Southern Nigeria.
