Northern Panhandle of West Virginia

The Northern Panhandle of West Virginia ( Pfannenstiel ) is a special cultural and geographical terms, the region within the U.S. state of West Virginia. It represents the northernmost part of the state, which is bounded on the north and west by the Ohio River, which forms the border with Ohio. In the east, the area is bordered by Pennsylvania. The southern border of the remaining area of the state of West Virginia is the extended Mason - Dixon line.

As the area around Pittsburgh is rather counted for Midwest region of the Northern Panhandle west by its location on the Ohio Appalachia than to the northeast.

The four counties are counted for Northern Panhandle:

  • Hancock County
  • Brooke County
  • Ohio County
  • Marshall County

Often it is also expected the immediate south adjacent to the Marshall County Wetzel County with the Northern Panhandle.

The main cities in Northern Panhandle are Wheeling, Weirton and Moundsville.

In the region there are three institutions of higher learning: the public West Liberty University, the private Bethany College, Wheeling Jesuit University and the Catholic

In the late 19th century, the territory of the Northern Panhandle has developed into a highly industrialized region characterized. In particular, the steel industry and the manufacture of glass came to importance. Meanwhile, however, many of the industrial plants have been closed, as elsewhere throughout the Rust Belt.
