Northern Rhodesian African National Congress

The Northern Rhodesian African National Congress ( African National Congress) is a political party in Zambia, which was founded in 1948 as Nordrhodesischer Congress and was the country's first political party.

Prehistory

Your roots are the Charities ( Welfare Societies ) of black Africans in the Copperbelt, which could be founded and because the British colonial government maintained a trade union ban, have been used politically. The strike by black workers in 1930 was matched in these charitable organizations.

In 1951 the party in the name Nordrhodesischer African National Congress (Northern Rhodesian African National Congress) and chose Harry Nkumbula its president.

Development

There were connections of the North Rhodesian African National Congress on the African National Congress ( African National Congress) in South Africa. In 1953, Kenneth Kaunda Secretary General of the party. He came from Chinsali.

In 1958 the party split over the question of whether they should participate in the legislative elections, in which only a minority of the black population was eligible to vote. Kenneth Kaunda went for a radical position, split from his camp and formed the Zambian African National Congress ( Zambian African National Congress).
