Northerner (train)

The Northerner was a night train service between Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand. The train with the train numbers 227 ( south ) and 626 ( north ) wrong on 3 November 1975 to 12 November 2004 as a replacement of previous night compounds without a name.

Since the completion of the railway line between Auckland and Wellington (North Iceland Main Trunk ) in 1908, there was on this route already a night train.

The predecessor trains were first, then powered by steam from 1971 with diesel-electric locomotives of the DA series. Then diesel locomotives of the DX series and in the 1990s the DF and DC range was used before Northerner himself.

The rolling stock consisted extensively remodeled and refurbished cars from the years 1937 to 1940. 3 baggage cars from 1960 were converted to the dining car. In the eighties, the rolling stock has had a few changes, so cars were equipped with air conditioning and rebuilt car to observation car, the mitliefen at the rear of the train.

In 2004, the night train was stopped for lack of utilization. Due to the high cost of the rolling stock, which would be re- designed, it is questionable whether there will be in the future a night train on the track.
