Norton County, Kansas
Norton County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Norton.
Geography
The County is located in northwestern Kansas, Nebraska and bordered to the north has an area of 2283 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Phillips County, Graham County, Sheridan County and Decatur County.
History
Norton County was formed on 26 February 1867. It was named after Orloff Norton, an officer in the American Civil War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Norton County 5953 people in 2266 households and 1470 families in Norton County. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.35 percent White, 4.05 percent African American, 0.44 percent Native American, 0.42 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.02 percent from other races groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.37 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2266 households out of which 28.2 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 7.0 percent were single mothers and 35.1 percent were non-families. 32.3 percent of all households were single-person households and 17.9 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.89 persons.
22.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent 18 to 24 years 28.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 19.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 122.1 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 years or 122.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,050, and the median income for a family was $ 37,036. Males had a median income of $ 25,983, women $ 20,381. The per capita income was $ 16,835. 6.1 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
