Norvaline is a non-proteinogenic α -amino acid. Structurally, L- norvaline derives by substitution of the α - hydrogen atom by an amino group (-NH2) of the valeric acid. L- valine and L- isovaline are constitutional isomers of L- Norvalins.

By decarboxylation of norvaline formed of n-butylamine. Its common name Norvalamin indicates this reaction.

Application

L- norvaline inhibit the enzyme arginase, so that it comes to increase in arginine concentration. Norvaline can be incorporated in place of L -leucine into proteins.
