Norwegian Polar Institute

The Norwegian Polar Institute (Norwegian: Norsk Polarinstitutt ) is Norway's national institution for polar research. It is run under the supervision of the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment and organized expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. Since 1968, it operates a research station in Ny- Ålesund on Svalbard. The offices are located in Tromsø and in Forskningspark at the UNIS on Svalbard, to another research station in Queen Maud Land in Antarctica. The Institute employs approximately 110 employees.

The institute was founded in 1928 by Adolf Hoel as Norges Svalbard -og Ishavsundersøkelser (abbreviated NSIU ).
