History

Det Norske Studentersamfund was founded by 17 students at the University of Oslo on October 2, 1813. In the first period, the students met due to the small size yet with members of the student organization. When the student organization grew, its own premises were rented.

The student organization worked for several years as a closed literary club, in 1820 it was open to all graduates who wanted to join, and was thus also an organization that could represent all students.

In 1861 the student organization opened its own building in Universitetsgaten 26. This has been funded solely by donations and voluntary contributions. The building was sold in 1918. After many years of campaigns to build a new building Chateau Neuf was opened in 1971 and is now the seat of the Det Norske Studentersamfund, which hosts cultural events.
