Norwich Castle

Norwich Castle is a fortress in the English city of Norwich. The fortress dates from the time of the Normans. It now houses a museum that deals with both history and art of different epochs shows.

Originally, the castle was built as a royal residence. Like other Norman castles of the time, including the Tower of London, there is a fortress from a large central keep and various ditch and walls. During the keep is still largely preserved faithfully, other buildings were badly damaged over the centuries or rebuilt.

Norwich Castle is located on a 20 -meter-high artificial hill, which the defeated Anglo-Saxons had to build. The built in 1100 of stone Keep has a footprint of about 27 meters square, and reaches a height of 20 meters. The dry moat surrounded by a fortress for centuries dominated the skyline of the city and is still today the center of the town center.

The fort served as a prison since the 14th century and since 1894 as a museum. The museum's collection includes pieces from the history of Norfolk and England. The archaeological department has specialized primarily on ancient Egypt. In art wing is found next to the most important compilation of the Norwich School of Artists also the world's largest collection of teapots from ceramics.
