Norwood (South Australia)

Norwood is a suburb of Adelaide with 5700 inhabitants in the Australian state of South Australia. It is located about 4 kilometers east of the city center and is the seat of the administrative area ( LGA) Norwood, Payneham & St Peters City. With its establishment on July 7, 1853, is the oldest independent administrative unit, outside of Adelaide, South Australia.

History

Norwood is named after Norwood, London. Initial planning and land grants were held in 1847. Early 1850s then a group of people for a joint management of the three neighboring towns of Norwood, Kensington Marryatville and began to engage, which was established on July 7, 1853 then. Then in 1859 the first town hall in South Australia was opened in Norwood. In the 1860s, a water and gas network was established in 1878 and Norwood was tied by a horse -drawn streetcar, to the public transport network of Adelaide. The old town hall was in 1883 replaced by a new, two-story building. It forms, with its location on the main street of The Parade Norwood today the center of the district.
