Nossa Senhora do Monte is a village in the middle of the island of Brava, Cape Verde. It has about 6500 inhabitants and is situated at an altitude of 770 meters above the sea level.

Location

Nossa Senhora do Monte is located in the mountains almost exactly in the middle of the island on a mountain ridge. With just 7 km from the island capital of Vila Nova Sintra it is connected by a good motorable and in all weather road. A few miles south is the village of Campo Baixo, which is also accessible via a good road. At the small harbor town of Faja de Agua on the west coast of Brava can be reached from Nossa Senhora do Monte from a downhill trail. The highest mountain of the island of Brava, the 976 -meter Alto de Fontainhas is accessible via a walking path.

History

Nossa Senhora do Monte was founded in 1826 and a few years later a bishopric. However, most bishops not resided for a long time to Brava. Since 1862 Nossa Senhora do Monte is a place of pilgrimage.

Attractions and infrastructure

The main attraction of Nossa Senhora do Monte is the pilgrimage church founded in 1826, formerly at times served as a bishop's church. According to her, the place is also called, the place name literally means " Our Lady of the Mountain" and refers to the Virgin Mary. Even today holds the Bishop of Cape Verde worship here from when he is on Brava. From the forecourt of the church you can enjoy a pleasant view over the west coast of the island.

Opposite the church, a school was established in a large villa from the colonial era. In the village there is also a smaller Adventist Church.

In the main street of the village there are several small shops and a simple restaurant. Accommodations for tourists are not present in Nossa Senhora do Monte, in the neighboring village about one kilometer away Cova Joana however, there is a guest house.

Transport links

Nossa Senhora do Monte is to reach several times a day called the " Aluguer " and typical of the Cape Verde buses from the island capital of Vila Nova de Sintra from. But it does not operate on a fixed schedule, but then go off again when enough passengers have arrived.
