Notion (ancient city)

Notion (Greek Νότιον ) was an ancient city on the west coast of Asia Minor. It is located in modern day Turkey about 50 km south of İzmir on the Gulf of Kuşadası.

Notion was considered Aeolian foundation, but was in Ionia. It served as a port for rosin and the Sanctuary of Claros. In Notion came in ancient times to the pilgrims when they wanted to visit Klaros. You pilgrimage about a kilometer on a holy road to the local oracle. In the Hellenistic period Notion was combined with colophon.

The town was elevated on a hill, from which one could overlook the sea well. There are still remnants of the ramparts, the necropolis, the temple, the Agora and the theater.
