Notiophilus rufipes

The Eilkäfer ( Notiophilus ) are a genus of beetles in the family of ground beetles ( Carabidae ) within the subfamily Nebriinae. It occurs in Europe with 14 species and sub-species, 8 are also native to Central Europe.

Features

The beetles are only 3.5 to 5.5 millimeters long. They have a flat body with broad parallel form and a shiny metallic color. Her head is large, their slanted compound eyes are very large. Your pronotum is broad, its front edge is drawn pointed. The elytra have nine rows of dots, but where between the first and second row a missing, resulting in a wide, smooth oblong box. Some species can be reliably determined only on the basis of a genital examination.

The larvae see where the dam runners ( Nebria ) similar, but their legs, rails and tarsi are of equal length and have a rough surface.

Occurrence and life

The diurnal animals live in dry places, especially in forest clearings, meadows and heaths and hide under moss and stones. One can observe on the ground while running above the foliage. They feed on prey on springtails and mites. In Central Europe they occur in August and September. They overwinter mostly as imagos.
