Notker Wolf

Notker Wolf OSB (* as Werner Wolf on June 21, 1940 in Gronenbach ) is the ninth Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation.

Life

Werner Wolf was born as the son of a tailor. He joined (today Bernhard Striegel -Gymnasium ) and the Rhabanus - Maurus -Gymnasium St. Ottilie after high school in 1961 in the Benedictine monastery of Saint Ottilia an after school at the secondary school Memmingen. There he was given the religious name Notker. After his profession in 1962, he studied philosophy at the Benedictine High School Saint Anselm in Rome. In 1965 he moved to the Ludwig -Maximilians- University of Munich and studied theology, philosophy, and zoology, inorganic chemistry and astronomy history. In 1971 he was appointed as Professor of Natural Philosophy and Science at the Pontifical University of Saint Anselm in Rome.

On 1 October 1977 he was elected as the successor to Josef Viktor Dammertz for the fifth abbot of the Abbey of St. Ottilia and thus Abbot President of the Congregation of the Missionary Benedictines. He forced the monastery in China and India. In 1982 he revived the Priory Jakob Berg at Ockenheim through new construction again.

On 7 September 2000, he was elected as the ninth Abbot Primate and thus to the highest representative of the Benedictines. On 25 September 2008, the Congress of Abbots of Benedictine Confederation for another four years confirmed him in his office as Abbot Primate. On September 21, 2012, the Congress of Abbots confirmed again for four years, he is the oldest reigning Abbot Primate. As Abbot Primate, he is a global spokesperson for the oldest order of Christianity with 7,500 monks and 16,500 nuns and sisters.

Work

Notker Wolf occurs in public with decidedly political opinions. In summer 2007, he appeared in a display of the Initiative for a New Social Market Economy. He called for more individual responsibility as well as cuts in unemployment benefits, if a suitable job is not accepted. On the other hand, he also denies irresponsible management and profit maximization.

Notker Wolf is also known in Germany, that he has not left as senior officials of the Catholic Church of his love of rock music, and occasionally with the band center at concerts, in which he plays the electric guitar and especially the flute. The band is based musically on the Rolling Stones and stars alongside original compositions and cover versions, including Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. Wolf is a board member and chairman of the international Benedictine bodies L'Alliance Inter Monastères and Dialogue interreligieux Monastique and the China Commission of the Order.
