Noto Cathedral

The San Nicolò Cathedral in Noto is the cathedral of the Diocese of Noto founded in 1844 the church Sicily region. The main parish church ( Chiesa Madre ) of Noto was completed at the site of several previous buildings in 1770 in the style of Sicilian Baroque.

The cathedral is reached by a wide flight of steps. Characteristic are the twin, articulated by columns facade and the portal showing the stages of life of the patron saint of Noto Corrado Confalonieri. A silver shrine with the relics of the patron saint is kept in a chapel in the right aisle.

The cupola above the three-nave interior crashed in 1996 with the aisles one due to erosion and fatigue. From 1999 to 2007, the cathedral was restored. In 2009 the Russian artist Oleg Supereko painted from the dome with new frescoes.
