Notre-Dame Basilica-Cathedral (Quebec City)

The Cathedral Basilica of Notre- Dame de Québec is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec. It is located in the Arrondissement historique du Vieux- Quebec ( Old Quebec) opposite the Hôtel de Ville de Québec ( City Hall of Quebec City ) and at the Séminaire de Québec ( not to be confused with the Grand Séminaire de Québec) grown.

History

Notre- Dame de Québec is the oldest seat of a diocese north of Mexico and the oldest parish church in North America. In 1874 it was raised as the first church in the rank of a minor basilica.

The first building dates back to 1647th It was destroyed in 1759 by the English at the Siege of Quebec. The few years later built new building burned down on 22 December 1922. From 1923 to 1930, the present church was built. Since June 23, 1966 it stands as Bien culturel de Québec under monument protection, since January 1, 1989, she is a National Historic Site of Canada ( Lieu historique national du Canada).

Architecture and Facilities

During the rebuilding of the 1920s, the cathedral was built on the basis of the previous buildings. The architecture and the interior design are based on stylistic forms of pre-revolutionary French Classicism (Louis XVI-style ). Notre Dame is a three-aisled basilica with geostete ambulatory. Of the two towers of the show in the West only the southern facade with an octagonal floor and double lantern is fully executed; the northern ends in a square butt.

Organs

In addition, Notre- Dame de Québec is the necropolis of the bishops and archbishops of Québec. The first bishop, François de Montmorency -Laval, rests inside the church, the rest in the crypt.
