Notre Dame des Neiges Cemetery

The cemetery of Notre- Dame-des- Neiges ( " Our Lady in the Snow" ) is a cemetery in the Canadian city of Montreal. It is 139 acres in size and is located in the borough of Côte -des- Neiges -Notre- Dame-de- Grâce. The cemetery is located on the western slope of the Montreal local mountain Mont Royal. It is bordered by the campus of the Université de Montréal in the West, from the main road Chemin de Côte -des- Neiges in the south, from the Parc du Mont -Royal in the east and from the cemetery of Mont -Royal in the north. With 55 kilometers sidewalks and over one million people buried Notre- Dame-des- Neiges is the largest cemetery in the country.

Notre- Dame-des- Neiges was opened in 1854 as the cemetery of the parish of Notre- Dame de Montréal. He was originally reserved for Catholics, why French Canadians have been buried here mostly. The adjacent cemetery Mont- Royal was Protestant and served mainly the Anglo Canadians. Meanwhile, both cemeteries are open to all. Due to the growing demand for cremations nine buildings were constructed since 1978 that are architecturally inspired by mausoleums and where the urns are kept.

Since 1999, the cemetery is classified as a National Historic Site.
