The Notre Dame University ( NDU ) in Zouk Mosbeh, 15 kilometers north of Beirut, was established by the Maronite Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1987. Since the establishment of the Order in 1695, there is a focus on education and upbringing. The first school was established in 1696. In 1978 the member of the Order, Bishop Beschara Rahi, founded the Louzaie College of Higher Education. The university has several branches in the north, in the Chouf Mountains. The University is governed by the American educational system. There are 7000 students at the University.

Since 1994 there is a Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Since 2000, the faculty was divided into two departments.
