Nottingham Express Transit

Nottingham Express Transit ( NET short ) is a modern tram system, which opens up the English city of Nottingham and its suburbs. It was opened on 9 March 2004 by the Minister of Transport, Alistair Darling, costing £ 200 million. Between the first plans and the opening were 16 years old.

Tram route begins at the main station of Nottingham, south of the city center, leads north to Hucknall and is 14 km long. Four kilometers are on roads and ten lead along railway lines. North of the city center there is a short branch line to Phoenix Park. At several stops, there are park-and- ride facilities.

The built by Bombardier Transportation Trams run every five minutes during rush hour.

There are expansion plans for two new lines under the project name NET Phase Two. One would continue in a southwesterly direction to the Chilwell and the University of Nottingham open, the other to Wilford and Clifton. The contracts with the consortium Tramlink Nottingham will be closed in September 2011, the opening is planned for 2014. The project aims to reduce road congestion ahead and make four million car journeys unnecessary.
