Nova (operating system)

Nova Linux is a Gentoo -based Linux distribution that is being developed since 2005 by the Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas in Havana / Cuba and published since 2009. It uses GNOME, but it can also be added KDE and XFCE.

In 2011, the project announced that 8,000 computers at the Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas should be changed to Nova Linux 3.0.

The operating system will also be used in state-owned enterprises and government agencies. As a pilot project the Ministerio de Educación de Cuba, health care, the Instituto de Aeronáutica Civil de Cuba and the Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas to serve.

Background

Due to the economic embargo by the U.S. against Cuba U.S. products like Microsoft Windows can not be used legally. Updates are not available. Also for reasons of principle one would like to use any American software. The conflict between Cuba and the United States is old. According to the dean of the computer science University, Alain Guerreiro, could also lack access to the source code is not checked, the security of Windows.
