Novalis was the name of a German rock band from the 1970s. Among the best known works of the band include the title summer evening and he who hears laughing butterflies.

Band History

With a newspaper ad searched 1971, the singer Jürgen Wenzel and bassist Heino Schünzel interested in a common band. It reported the organist Lutz Rahn and drummer Hartwig Biereichel. Together with guitarist Carlo Karges made you the Hamburg group Mosaic, which soon renamed itself in Novalis. After the debut 1973 album Wenzel left the band and Heino Schünzel took over the vocals. Carlo Karges, who later played at Nena, was replaced by Detlef job. In 1976, as an additional member to the Austrian singer Fred Mühlböck.

On their first album, the group sang in English, in 1975 they switched to the proposal of the new producers, the former Rattle Achim Reichel musician to German texts. In addition to his own poetry was used among other poems of its namesake Novalis ( wonders treasures, if not more facts and figures ... ).

With the albums summer evening, Surf and Maybe you're a clown? and the distinctive, haunting voice of Fred Mühlböck the Group achieved its greatest success and gained even international importance. Lutz Rahn published in 1978 his solo album, solo ride.

1979 Novalis produced a concept album about whaling (fins angels) with which one the World Wildlife Fund supported. The text describes the capture of a whale, the surrender of the animal in a zoo, and is adjusting the catcher repentance that leads then to the liberation of the animal. Amazing thing is that in the lyrics of " scales" and " gills " is mentioned, which does not close on a whale. On the other hand, is the animal in the texts as a symbol for many / all of the animals, respectively. nature as a whole. In this respect, apparently either a whale being carried but one of undefined fish or the terms come from the poetic license.

Beginning of the 1980s the typical style of Novalis seemed to have survived. The musicians were looking for a new direction, the group was swept away from the Neue Deutsche Welle and gradually dissolved after several line-up changes on.

In 1985, the Group adopted the tide with the album after us. The guitarist Günther Brackmann accompanied on tour 1985 Novalis as a guest musician. 1993 brought Rahn and Biereichel yet figured out a sampler with old live recordings from the best of times.
