Novelty and fad dances

A party dance is a group dance with a fixed predetermined choreography, which is usually danced on a well established given piece of music. In general, party dances consist of 8 to 16 bars long sequence of simple dance moves that is repeated constantly. Party dances are therefore quite easy to learn.

The terms party dance and fashion dance often fall together, but are not synonymous. Party dances are exactly then fashionable dances when they trigger a temporary dance fashion. In most party dances, however, this is not true.

One of the oldest party dances the formed around 1965 in England Memphis, which is danced to the song Memphis Tennessee by Pat Boone and is still to be found in dance schools. Other examples are the chicken dance, the Time Warp from the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show or even La Colita and the Macarena and the Las Ketchup Dance, or " Burger Dance" by DJ Ötzi.

Almost forgotten are dances of the 60s like slop, Watusi, Mashed Potato, Shake, Swim, Hully Gully, Memphis and Madison, which were usually practiced as a line dance. Ray Charles was a part of it set a musical and choreographic monument in the movie Blues Brothers.
