Novempopulania

Novempopulana ( Latin for "Land of the nine nations" ) was one of the provinces formed by Emperor Diocletian and was named as part of the former province of Gallia Aquitania Aquitania Tertia also. The province was the extreme south-west of Gaul and extended between the Garonne and the Pyrenees. Neighboring provinces were Aquitania secunda in the north, Gallia Narbonensis in the east and Hispania Tarraconensis in the south.

The nine nations of the Novempopulana were:

  • The Tarbelli to Aquae Tarbellicae ( Dax, Landes )
  • The Auscii to Eliumberrum ( Auch, Gers )
  • The Bigerriones to Turba ( Tarbes, Bigorre )
  • The Convenae to Lugdunum ( Saint -Bertrand -de- Comminges )
  • The Consorani ( Saint- Lizier, couserans )
  • The Elusates to Elusa ( Eauze, Bas- Armagnac )
  • The Lactorates to Lactora ( Lectoure, Lomagne )
  • The Vasates to Cossium ( Bazas )
  • The Boii ( Lamothe in Le Teich, Pays de Buch )

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the province Novempopulana went into Gascony.
