Novocheboksarsk

Novocheboksarsk (Russian Новочебоксарск, Chuvash Çĕнĕ Шупашкар / Cene Şupaşkar ) is a large city with 124.097 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Russian republic of Chuvashia. It lies on the southern bank of the Volga, below the five kilometers away Republic Capital Cheboksary.

History

The city was built from the year 1960 and was originally a suburb of Cheboksary. Its formation was the construction of the hydroelectric plant in Cheboksary on Tscheboksarsker Reservoir of the Volga in the 1960s. In 1965, the then place the name Novocheboksarsk (literally as " New Cheboksary ") and the city status was awarded. 1971 Novocheboksarsk has been administratively directly to the Chuvash ASSR, 1983 exceeded its inhabitants already the limit of 100,000.

On March 2, 2008 to coincide with the presidential elections, a referendum on a union of the two cities took place in Cheboksary and Novocheboksarsk. This plan failed, however, because although 63 % of the population of Cheboksary, but only 38% of the residents of Novocheboksarsk voted in favor.

Economy and Transport

In addition to the hydroelectric power plant, which now belongs to the Russian energy company RusHydro, exist in Novocheboksarsk several key industries, including the chemical plant Chimprom, a building material, a textile factory and a tube.

With a connection to the highway M7 and by their Volga River port, the city is an important transportation hub. The nearest railway station is located in Cheboksary. The public transport of the city consists among other things of an independent trolleybus network, which was put into operation in 1979.
