Novohrodivka

Nowohrodiwka (Ukrainian Новогродівка; Russian Новогродовка / Nowogrodowka ) is a small mining town in eastern Ukraine with 15,416 inhabitants ( 2013).

Geography

The city is located in the Donets Basin in the Donetsk oblast 45 km north- west to the Oblastzentrum Donetsk and is a neighboring town of Selydowe to the municipality they belonged until 1992. Between the two cities, the highway M 04, a section of the European Route 50 runs.

History

Was founded the modern city as a settlement name Hrodiwka (Ukrainian Гродівка ) in 1939 in connection with the construction of the coal mine " Nowohrodowska ". On 3 September 1943, the city was liberated from the occupation of the Wehrmacht. The status of a city and its present name was given the city in 1958. In 1992, the city of Nowohrodiwka Selydowe was separated and became a city of regional significance.
