Novuss

Novuss is of Latvian origin skill game for two or four players, which has similarities with billiards and carrom.

The console of Novuss is square, flat and divided into four gaming areas. Each zone is one of the game discs by another player. The console has four pockets in each corner and the task of the player is to push the wooden disks into these pockets. For shooting the wooden disks in the mesh pockets on the corners of the player is a floor ( queue ) are available. The game is played in turns, each player comes from his side of the table. If you play in pairs, so the couples alternate. The side that first has its wheels in the pockets wins.

Novuss belongs to the family of billiard and pool games. However, the game table has folding legs and is transportable. Furthermore include 2 disc set ( 16 16 pcs ) of different colors ( red and black) and two sticks to play set, which is made entirely of wood.

Novuss is suitable for both children and adults, and easy to learn. It calls for skills, visual acuity, reaction, accuracy and the ability to think ahead.

History

Novuss applicable in Latvia as a national sport. We know that the game appeared in 1927: sailors, the English ports anliefen, played in the local pubs a similar game. And so the first console was based on drawings, which were brought from England, manufactured in Latvia. The first tables appeared in the ports of Ventspils, Liepaja and Riga, in which the game Novuss also developed further. The oldest record of the rules of the game date back to 1932.

At that time it was called Novuss or KOROONA. It is believed that the name comes from Estonia Koroona, as the game also established in the local port cities. However, in Latvia it spread rapidly and soon became the national sport. The first professional competition was held in 1932 and were won by Albert Raminsch.

The Novuss Federation of Latvia was founded on December 6, 1963. Since 1964, national championships are single, carried out since 1966 in the team competition. It men's, women 's and children's teams were (15 years ) was founded.

In 1980, the Novuss section 55.000 members. Meanwhile, county, city, state and world championships are held. Novuss belongs since 1993 to the three most popular sports in Latvia.

The game also was established in the U.S., Canada, Israel, Georgia, Ukraine, Australia, England, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany. You play Novuss / KOROONA in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Regular international competitions between Latvia and Estonia will take place. Since 1993 world championships are conducted in which teams from the countries participating in which Novuss has a certain widespread.

September 30, 2006 Novuss was included in the offer of the 1st Baltic Kids Olympics.

In January 2010, one of the candidate tasks in the Pro7 - game show " Schlag den Raab" was to win a Novuss game. This Stefan Raab has decided for itself.
