Nowata County, Oklahoma
Nowata County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Nowata.
Geography
The County is located in northeastern Oklahoma, bordered to the north Kansas and has an area of 1504 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Montgomery County ( Kansas), Labette County ( Kansas), Craig County, Rogers County and Washington County.
History
Nowata County was formed on 16 July 1907 as original county of Cherokee country. It was named after the district capital of Nowata.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Nowata County 10,569 people in 4,147 households and 2,989 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 72.43 percent White, 2.46 percent African Americans, 16.56 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, and 0.26 percent from other races; 8.17 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.23 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,147 households, 31.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.8 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers. 27.9 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent of all households and 13.3 percent of households had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97.
26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 percent between 18 to 24, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,470, and the median income for a family was $ 36,354. Males had a median income of $ 27,047 versus $ 19,371 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,244. 9.0 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
