Nowhere in Africa is a movie by the German director Caroline Link from the year 2001. The film is based on the autobiographical novel by Stefanie Zweig with the same title. Producer Peter Herrmann secured the rights to the material, even before the book was a bestseller. Caroline Link turned it with great effort on location in Africa. Nowhere in Africa Best Foreign Language Film was honored in 2003 with an Oscar in the category.

Action

The Jewish family Redlich flees from the Nazis in 1938 to Kenya. The former lawyer Walter Redlich works there as a manager at a meager farm. His wife Jettel can adapt to life in the other country is difficult. Her daughter, Regina, however, flourishes on the foreign continent to formally. She learns the language of the country and is interested in the customs. In the cook Owuor she finds a good friend. However, in the marriage of the Redlich there is a crisis increasingly. Very slowly they find each other again. After the two have found each other again, learn the Redlich of the murder of Walter's father and sister Jettel. Walter Redlich, who now serves in the British Army, is running after the end of the war for a position as a judge in the ruined Germany; his wife Regina and prefer to stay in Kenya. 1947 reverse the Redlich but returned to Germany.

Background

At the Academy Awards Caroline Link was unable to attend due to illness of her daughter. 23 years after the last German film had been considered as best foreign language film with the Oscar ( The Tin Drum ), nowhere just won this award for 1998 already, Caroline Link's debut film was also nominated Beyond Silence in Africa.

The small Kenyan village Mukutani was the scene of the film. The crew led by director Caroline Link Mukutani founded the Foundation for long-term aid villagers even after the end of filming. Together with World Vision, they built a road to Mukutani.
