Nowy Targ

Nowy Targ ( Neumarkt German ) is a Polish district town in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, powiat Nowotarski. It is considered the capital of the Podhale region, is located on the Dunajec north of the High Tatras, about 65 kilometers south of Krakow and has about 30,000 inhabitants.

History

Between 1251 and 1254 allowed Bolesław Wstydliwy Cistercians to settle in the area, and probably laid the foundation stone for the town of Nowy Targ. Around 1326 a church was built on a hill. Casimir the Great in 1346 gave the settlement the city right under Magdeburg law. At this time presented German settlers from Silesia around 3 /4 of the population (see Forest German ). Between 1575-1578 the shoemaker founded the first guild in the city. 1601 a large fire destroyed large parts of Nowy Targ, while the church.
