NRS Social Grade

The NRS social grade are in the 1960s developed by the British National Readership Survey classification scheme for grouping of readers. Since then it has developed in the UK at a standard for socio-demographic studies and is used primarily for media companies, publishers and the advertising industry application in the analysis and exact address of target groups ( Audience profiling and audience targeting ). The social level are thus a criterion for decisions about marketing activities.

The scale is based on the occupation of higher earners (Chief Income Earner ) of the investigated household. The grades are often grouped into ABC1 and C2DE to separate the middle class ( middle class ) from the working class ( working class ). The approximately 1 to 2% of the UK population that belong to the upper class are not included in the classification scheme.
