History and foundation

At the GeSoLei exhibition was built the courtyard - area, designed by Wilhelm Kreis 1926. The exhibition building for the NRW Forum hosted by the GeSoLei first the kingdom Museum for Social and Economic Studies. At its technological, economic and social history exhibition concept was Oskar von Miller, the founder of the Deutsches Museum, was involved. After the Second World War to the beginning of the 1990s, here was the State Museum of Folk and economy, the interplay between man, nature and economy of work and leisure in the sociological changes pointed out as a technology museum, in particular specific developments within North Rhine- Westphalia. A walk-in coal mine in the basement was the main attraction of the house.

Due to a lack of acceptance and the former budget crisis the city of Dusseldorf, this museum was affected by the immediate closure and eventual disposal. In coordination of North Rhine -Westphalia with the city of Dusseldorf, a new concept for the house was developed. After a complete reconstruction, it was on October 9, 1998 as "NRW Forum Kultur und Wirtschaft" by the Minister of Culture of the State of NRW, Ilse Brusis reopened; the ceremony accompanied by a keynote speech by the Director of the New York Guggenheim Museum, Thomas Krens.

The infrastructure of the house was the responsibility of the State of North Rhine Westphalia, the state capital of Dusseldorf, Messe Dusseldorf, other institutions and Düsseldorf-based company jointly through a sponsoring organization. All exhibitions at the NRW-Forum were financed exclusively through its own revenue and sponsorship. Another special feature of the exhibition and event management of a public exhibition house by a private operator under a management contract is also the first long-term concern.

Closure

In September 2012, the State of North Rhine -Westphalia announced that it will get the end of 2013, the promotion of the Forum with an annual allowance of 750,000 euros, citing the contribution to fiscal consolidation. Architecture

The building is part of the protected courtyard ensembles, which dates back architectural origins in the early 1900's. On the occasion of 1902 held industrial, commercial and art exhibition set up the architects Albrecht Eugen Bender and Rückgauer landscaped around a courtyard Kunst Palast as the first of which now belong to a group of buildings.

(Now the Museum Kunst Palast ) 1926, the area of the arts palace was expanded to other buildings for the GeSoLei exhibition, designed by Wilhelm Kreis: The newly created courtyard ensemble comprised now also a planetarium (later Rheinhalle; Today: Tonhalle Dusseldorf ), the Rheinterasse as well as the national Museum of social and economic Studies, later the National Museum for people and business, which is since 1998, the exhibition building of the NRW - Forum.

A strict symmetrical arrangement of archaic monumental forms and expressionist brick facades are characteristic of the building. Simple, formally reduced components should dominate the overall impression - even the neo-baroque facade of the Palace of Fine Arts was adapted to the newly added buildings and covered with a simple, strict brick facade.

The ensemble is one next to Wilhelm Marx House and German Hygiene Museum in Dresden at the most significant designs of Wilhelm Kreis, who was the successor of Peter Behrens Director of the School of Applied Arts Dusseldorf in 1908 and whose architecture department in 1920 resulted in the Dusseldorf Art Academy.

" Temple -like Stems " / " temple-like corner pavilions " in the style of neoclassicism mark both ends of the single-storey building structure whose motif is repeated in the art museum on the one hand and the base of the Rheinhalle other., The building rests on a base, which is inclined. The darüberbefindlichen windows are summarized by stone ledges to horizontal bands.
