NSB Class 69

NSB BM 69 or NSB type 69 is the designation of an electrical multiple unit, which is used by the Norwegian State Railways for the commuter traffic on branch lines and partly on medium distances. It is the most common type of unit trains in Norway. All trains were built by Strømmens Værksted.

Strictly speaking, BM69 only the name of the motor vehicle, but it is also for the entire motor from motor vehicles ( BM), vehicles ( BS) and possible intermediate cars used (B).

The trainsets can be coupled quickly thanks to the automatic Scharfenberg couplers. It is possible to couple up to three trainsets of types 69 and 70 to a unit train.

Series

The type BM69 is available in six series:

  • The BM69A series was the initial model, built in 1970 and 1971. A train consists of two vehicles ( motor cars and driving trailers BM BS). A total of 15 of these trains were built, three were assigned to 2006.
  • The successor series BM69B was manufactured in 1974. 18 of a total of 20 trains consist of two cars, two units were given an additional middle cars ( intermediate cars B). Some trains were also retrofitted with larger luggage compartments in order to use them for longer distances as shown on the mountain railway between Bergen and can Myrdal, where frequent ski equipment or bicycles are taken. While the basic type with two doors has on each side of the car, the B- series has only one door. This will increase the seating capacity, but slows down the boarding and alighting.
  • The successor BM69C in 1975 as Dreiwagenzug ( motor car BM, B intermediate cars and driving trailers BS) built. The 14 units are mostly used as commuter trains.
  • A total of 39 trains of BM69D series were produced 1983-1990. They can be distinguished from its predecessor due to the changed fronts.
  • The BM69E series form for use on medium distances converted trains in the D series. For example, the usual five- row seat has been replaced by four seats. The E- series was first used on the Gjøvikbahn and Jærbanen, but is now being used on the line between Bergen and Voss.
  • The BM69G series also originated from trains in the D series. It also has a first class and is equipped with vending machines for snacks and drinks. The nine traits of the G- series were reconstructed in Denmark and continue on the Gjøvikbahn.
