Region

Ntchisi is a city at 1500 meters with 7500 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ) in the Central Region of Malawi about 80 kilometers north of Lilongwe. It lies on the road Lilongwe- Mzuzu and is capital of the district of the same name with an area of ​​1655 km ² and around 204,000 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ).

Ntchisi is a very poor district and is one of the districts Chitipa and Nsanje to those with the most mud houses (not burnt brick and tin roof ). 1998 64.8 % of the population lived below the poverty line of MK 9.27 per capita per day ( = $ 0.36 ). The population distribution in the district is relatively uniform and consists, as in the entire highland region between the valleys of the rivers Lilongwe and Dwangwa, so the cities in the south Dowa, Mchinji and Kasungu in the west to the north, mainly from subsistence farmers. The soil is cultivated very close, but severely eroded. In the villages there is a lack mainly to artesian wells, good seed and fertilizer. Mainly maize and beans are grown, but also tobacco, peanuts, soybeans, sweet potatoes, potatoes and vegetables. At 1705 meters high mountain Ntchisi - east of the city is intensively reforested because of the erosion. On its lower slopes to the lake is still the original rain forest, which is designated as a bird sanctuary, including up to 700 meters above sea level yet miombo.

The city Ntchisi has a 1000 meter long airstrip, a hospital and primary and secondary schools that are structured and organized by a Japanese development program (2006 ).
